The other night I was taking pictures of Jupiter next to the moon, all of the pictures had a green dot near the moon. What am I doing wrong? http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-3/981247/DSC00300small.jpg Anyway, thanks in advance.

Little green men? haha Dust mote?.... Dirt on Lens... or? Reply Reply with quote Reply to thread Complain
If you used a long (2 sec or more) exposure it's a hot pixel. If the green dot is always there then you got a stuck pixel. Hot pixels are something unavoidable. They're the result of dark current in your sensor, which increase as the sensor heats up, as in a long exposure. There is no damage. A stuck pixel is a pixel (or a green dot) that is always there. This is either a damaged photodiode in your sensor, or the A/D converter for that location is shorted. A stuck pixel is damage. I have one or two hot pixels, and a few stuck pixels. I know where they are and if they're noticable in the shot I clone them out. I don't sweat stuff like this. If the pixel is a hot pixel, maybe it's best to forget it. If the pixel is a stuck pixel, and the camera is new, and it really bugs you, I would exchange the camera.

In my unlearned opinion it looks like lens flare...
It looks to big to be a single or even a few bad pixels. Is the dot in any pictures without the light source hitting the lens? If so, can we see them? Mikeeee -- http://www.mnmstudios.com

Looks like lens flare. Did you have a UV filter on at the time? That will cause that with night shots.

You're right Mike. I missed the link to the sample, and made a guess based on his comments. You're absolutely right.

lens flare.........looks like lens flare to me. I'm not good at this stuff..........based on light angle / camera angle / exposure length. someone will probably explain it for you.

I would think it's a reflection inside the lens, resulting from
shooting directly at the light source.

Re: Green Dot in my pictures
Yup, that's lens flare... use a smaller apeture (higher f-stop) in order to reduce this effect.

Re: Green Dot in my pictures
Which green dot? One is a lens flare or looks to be, and the other looks like a hot pixel. No fix for the lens flare, other than a new camera. Just don't look at really bright stuff and you won't get them. As for the green hot pixel or stuck pixel, no fix there either. Most consumer equipment warranties don't cover hot pixels or stuck pixels unless they are in numbers, or clusters like 10 pixels, not just 1. Maybe it's time for an upgrade, or if it's a new camera, return it. And no, you did nothing wrong, except the lens flare, but some people like that effect. Nothing you did could have caused that green pixel.

Re: Green Dot in my pictures
Actually... this will make the lens flare worse. Try it sometime. Shorter exposures will result in less noticable lens flares, meaning larger apertures. Go outside and try it sometime in the sun, there is a huge difference.

I think that other spot you are refering to Squirrel is actually a star.....looked to be a pretty clear night. a new camera won't fix the lens flare - even happens with SLR's. I think that the exposure was a little long for the moon - 2 much light which also equals a lens flare (probably would have been there even with a shorter exposure just less noticeable).

I'm still getting familiar with taking pictures at night. I use the DSC-W1 right now. The star you see near the Moon is the planet Jupiter. The green dot appeared near the moon in different pictures but in a different spot, so maybe that eliminates the bad pixel idea. Henry

Not ture, there are lenses out there that don't share the same fate as Sony's lenses. Canon L series lenses, UD glass lenses from Sigma, and so on. Also, I'm pretty sure that dot isn't a star, because it seems to be the only one.

SLR picture - scanned and downsized for the web. while she was taking this i was yelling at her to put on the lens hood..........(I got to tell her "I told you so when I saw the picture"). But, I think she likes lens flare I see her shooting into the sun a lot intentionally. I don't understand because she knows how to use a camera quite well. This was taken with a good Minolta and a decent lens......tons of lens flare.

have you even got L-glass?
I can show you some pretty nifty flares with a 17-40 F/4 L and a 70-200 F/4 L
In my mind, it IS real See profile for equipment!

Re: Green Dot in my pictures
The "star" which is to the lower left of the picture is not a star, it's a planet :), that is why you can clearly see it while next to the moon (full moon at that), because planets are brighter :), any other stars near the moon would have been outshined by the full moon. henry

There are lenses that don't flare to a noticable extent. That lens obviously is not one of them. Go pick up a good Canon L lens and try it out, or the Canon 50mm 1.4 USM. Reply Reply with quote Reply to thread Complain |
