Why does my rabbit clean himself after i pet him

Fur
Brushing your bunny helps reduce shedding. Rabbits have very thin and sensitive skin, so it's important to get a comb that is gentle on your rabbit. Long-haired rabbits should be combed every 3-4 days to prevent matting. See a recommended gentle comb to the right. Use light pressure whenever combing a bun.

Bum
Sometimes bunnies get messy butts because it is difficult for them to reach and clean that far back (especially if they are particularly robust). Once in a while, a gentle butt bath or trim might be necessary to take care of 'clingers' or matting. Use small scissors for cutting hair to cut any mattes or clingers from your bunny's bum (see recommended scissors to the right). You can also use a warm, damp rag to gently wipe the backend to tidy things up. It is important to keep that area clean to avoid sickness, infection or maggots. 

Ears
Healthy ears are paramount for a rabbit! If a rabbit gets an ear infection, it can result in a severe head tilt which can sometimes become permanent and lead to unintentional rolling. Even though a good bunny vet will scope your bunny's ears to make sure there's not wax buildup or any signs of infection, a good maintenance practice is to give your bunny ear cleaning solution once a week or bi-weekly. You can get this solution from your bunny vet. Administer the solution by sitting on your knees with your bunny gently held between your legs, put one drop in one ear and massage gently at the base of the ear (you should hear the liquid moving around in there a little), then repeat on the other ear. Never try to stick anything in your rabbit's ears to clean them, leave that to the vet.

Teeth
Another important aspect of bunny health and maintenance is making sure that your bunny's teeth wear down properly. Rabbit teeth constantly grow, so it's important that they get checked with a scope once or twice a year by your bunny vet to ensure your bun's teeth are wearing down evenly. In some cases, a back tooth might wear down to a point and cut into your bunny's cheek. In this case, the vet will file the tooth down. One way to help ensure your bun's teeth wear down properly is to provide your bunny with toys to chew on and make sure plenty of hay is always available for him to munch on.

Bunny Love!

Do you love your bunny? Does he/she love you? Sometimes it can be hard to tell if your bunny loves you because rabbits do not communicate with words, wag their tails, or meow at you and lift their tails in your face. In order to know whether or not your rabbit loves you, you need to learn bunny language.

Once you understand this language, you will see that there are some subtle signs that rabbits give when they like you. Five of these signs are listed below. Read on to find out how your bunny feels about you.

Signs of Affection From Rabbits

1. Licks and nibbles
2. Demanding head rubs
3. Running around your feet in circles
4. Binkying
5. Lying down and chilling out
6. Tooth-clicking

Does Your Rabbit Love You?

If you're taking good care of your pet rabbit, there's a high chance that your rabbit loves you and likes to be around you. That being said, there are some body language cues that rabbits give out when they're happy. Here are a few:

1. Licks and Nibbles

Bunnies show affection by grooming, so if your rabbits gently nuzzle, lick, and perhaps even try to nibble you gently, they are showing you that they love and care for you. This is also a sign of submission.

Sometimes your bunny will lick and nibble your clothing or a piece of nearby fabric instead of you. This allows your rabbit to show you that he/she loves you without lowering itself to the act of grooming you. This behaviour may also be caused by confusion. If this happens, your bunny is not entirely sure where you end and where your clothes/furniture begins.

If your bunny nudges you and then sits around expectantly, that is a sign that he/she wants a head rub. It is also a sign that the bunny is in charge and you should do what it says. However, unlike other species such as dogs, it doesn't much matter if your bunny is deluded into thinking that it is in charge.

A rabbit that loves you will try to demand your attention in the form of head rubs and neck scratches.

3. Running Around Your Feet in Circles

Sometimes bunnies will greet their owners by happily running around their feet in circles. This movement can also be combined with binkying. It means that they're happy, but it also might mean that they want something from you—it can also be a form of begging! The latter will especially be true if you happen to be holding a treat that they love, such as a banana or carrot.

4. Binkying

When a rabbit binkies, it leaps in the air and flips its ears around. Binkies mean that your bunny is happy and content and is not afraid to show you! If you like, you can mimic this motion by flipping your hair around to show your bunny that you're happy too.

5. Lying Down and Chilling Out

Does your bunny flop down and stretch out near you? This shows that your bunny feels safe enough to relax around you. A bunny on its back or side, with its legs out and tummy exposed, is very vulnerable, so if your rabbit does this around you it means that they trust you wholeheartedly.

6. Tooth-clicking

A rabbit's version of purring is done by rubbing its teeth together, also called tooth-clicking. It's a very soft sound that can be hard to hear if you're not paying attention. However, if your rabbit does this, it means that it's very happy! Bunnies are especially likely to do this if they're being petted or stroked gently.

How to Make Your Pet Rabbit Like You

You can ensure that your rabbit loves and cares for you by doing everything you can to keep it happy. A bunny that is groomed, well-fed, and kept in a comfortable home will have every reason to show you affection and demand your attention. Taking good care of a rabbit is not too difficult—it just includes a few simple steps, such as:

1. Set Up a Comfortable Home

Rabbits can live indoors, but they do need space to hop around and explore. You can do this by letting them have free reign in bunny-proofed rooms, or you can keep them in a puppy pen or rabbit cage—however, do keep in mind that you will have to let the rabbit out every day so that it has a chance to exercise.

2. Feed It the Right Foods

Make sure that your rabbit has plenty of fresh hay to munch on! It's more nutritious than the rabbit pellets that are found in most pet stores. You can also give your rabbits leafy green vegetables, such as lettuce and spinach, and carrots or other root vegetables sparingly as a treat.

3. Give Them a Place to Do Their Business

Some indoor rabbits can be trained, and you can give them a medium-sized cat litter box to use. If that's too difficult, however, just make sure to change your rabbit's bedding every couple of days so that they have a clean and hygienic space. Rabbits can poop a lot!

4. Let Them Exercise Their Mind and Body

Bunnies aren't meant to stay in one spot all day! Rabbits get bored easily, which makes them prone to stress. Make sure your rabbit has plenty of space to stay active and hop around. Rabbits are also quite intelligent and need mental stimulation as well, so you can give them a cardboard castle to play in and explore.

5. Check Their Health Regularly

Rabbits will usually try to hide the fact that they're in pain or sick, so it's important to check your rabbit's health regularly. Keep an eye on its regular bodily functions (such as eating, exercise, pooping, and peeing habits) and take your bunny to the vet if you notice anything out of the ordinary. You should also take your pet rabbit to regular checkups.

My first bunny Mischief died because of gut stasis caused by stress, 5 days after we got him.The shop never warned me that diarrhoea could kill.

A few months later, Fluffy, a cross-lionhead joined our family at 5 weeks and 6 days old. He was friendly from the start and the only bunny to sniff my hand whist it was next to their run. It definitely was love at first sight. He followed me around, ran figure of 8s around my feet, constantly licked me and loved lying like a baby in my arms or on my chest. He sometimes got randy with us and flashed his willy at us, we quickly learnt the signs on when he needed to calm this down. He made noises when he became exciteable.

Fluffy was the most gorgeous bunny with a lovely nature. He loved us hiding his treats and having to find them.

He rarely thumped but he did this on one occasion when he caught sight of his shadow moving.He binkyed often, twisting his body around when he jumped and sometimes he would just suddenly race around the room. He loved eating and ripping plain scrunched up paper or cardboard tubes and would nibble material, whether we were wearing it or not.

Fluffy was trained to respond correctly to the word 'NO' and he would either stop what he was doing or it would stop him in advance, e.g when he was contemplating going behind the television. Occasionally, he would be in a mischievous mood and stop, look at us and then defy us anyway but most of the time it worked. He managed to rip the wallpaper a few times, luckily it didn't affect him and it was very tatty anyway, as we'd moved into a new home that needed redecorating.

Fluffy wasn't a huge fan of hay and when his teeth needed burring, he preferred eating kale instead. His favourite vegetables were different types of kale but he did also eat cabbage, carrots and sometimes brussel sprouts. He liked parsley and basil too. His favourite treats were dried peas, dried sweetcorn, dried banana and dried carrots.

Fluffy used to suffer with the changes in temperature, so if it suddenly went cold overnight or extremely hot, he would possibly end up with gut stasis. There were many times when he was close to death because of it. Over the years we understood the condition more and when he started getting it again February 2020, I bought some Fibreplex to keep him producing stools and critical care nutritious food which I syringe fed him, if I could see him going downhill.

He would often rub things with his chin, e.g Christmas tree branches, my slippers, and would nudge our hand or foot for attention. He loved his nose being stroked and would take it in turns in licking my hand or nudging me to stroke his nose.

Unfortunately, Fluffy suffered severe violent fits 23/5/20 and ended up unconscious. The vets were unable to give a cause, stating a possible burst tumour and they said it could have given him brain damage. the prognosis didn't look good at all as they didn't even know if he'd gain consciousness again. Knowing that this would also affect his digestion and that he would still have to deal with gut stasis after, if he did regain consciousness, we made the diffcult and heartbreaking decision to let him go peacefully. He passed away 23/5/20 only eight days before his 10th birthday.

I can honestly say that after being brought up with various dogs as a child, and now having spent almost 10 years caring for Fluffy, I would definitely choose a rabbit next time.

I know that not everyone is lucky as some bunnies can be nasty but it is so rewarding looking after a loving bunny.

Things to watch for in bunnies: overgrown teeth/ malocclusion, gut stasis (not eating, not drinking diarrhoea or lack of stools), bunnies acting strangely (as their health goes downhill suddenly, keep an eye out for sudden changes), flystrike (fly larvae can kill bunnies) and myxomatosis. Bunnies huddled in a corner or hiding could be a tell tale sign. Especially in the summer, make sure that bunny's bottom is kept clean so it doesn't attract flies.

Going off hay could be a sign of teeth issues as their teeth may not be able to grind the hay due to the angle they're growing or their length is too long.

Iceburg lettuce can cause gut stasis as it's too sweet. This can lead to them dying.

Signs of gut stasis need to be taken seriously and acted on straightaway.

This is an insight into the life of a bunny owner using the experience of having a beautiful, affectionate and playful little boy for almost 10 years. I hope this is useful and helps your bunnies get the quick attention they need if they fall ill.

As for me, the loss of my darling Fluffy, has left me heartbroken as our bond was like mum and son.

I got my bunny at 3 months old or so and he only lived to be 8 months. I loved him sooooooooo much and now he’s gone, i can’t b liege it. It’s been 2 weeks since he died but I’m still crying everyday. Inside I feel guilty for all the things I did wrong. I have dreams about him and also he did every single one of his thing on the list since the day I got him. He was such a sweet and loving rabbit and we had so many good memories together. When I was watched a movie in my room, he used to jump on my blanket and cuddle with me while idling me and nudging me. He was also so energetic and he did binkys and ran around my room like crazy. I carried him like a baby while feeding carrots and strawberries to him. His favorite food was strawberries. All I have is memories which make me even more sad. I also watch videos of me and him. How much fun together we were having. Some days it remotely feels like it’s getting better but in a day like this all I can think about is my loving bunny that died of heat. I wasn’t even there to say goodbye to him. He died in my moms arms but st least not alone. I miss him sooooooooooo much and the 5 months I had with him were the best. PLEASE help me! I really need it!!

I have a little girl who is seven-She was one of two babies in a family, with brother, Dad, Mum, Sadly her family has past-away.. She is in door, very loved and she sleep next two me and my daughter.She has the run of the house she is very clean and communicates with us with 100% understand on by sides. In the past two weeks' I have adopted a little bunny who is only just turning six months old. He was found and hand feed by cares in a recuse center for 14weeks, where he was De-sexed and given full bill of health. A went into a foster carer home until now, she had him for two months-he is very small, he is very calm and has adjusted to my home he receives nothing but the best. He has bitten my little girl on the nose and he try to nibble her nose. My little girls is very quite, she has the best of everything, she is so lovely. She is very scared of him at first now she will look at him through the pen, and has meet him at the pen, where he has given a little bite and now trying to nibble. Of cause we have taken all steps and practices-es with the bonding to keep safe. Now I think my be she was not lonely for a friend? She is loved more then a baby. DO YOU THINK THIS LITTLE WILL BE ABLE TO BOND WITH MY LITTLE GIRL OR SHOULD I RETURN HIM HE IS SO SWEET.

My bunny is crazy but I love it. She hops around, nudges me, walks on me like I'm part of the floor XD, practices digging, she found a spot where she pees and poops (unfortunately it's on my dogs bed...). Oh yes I forgot to mention that I have a dog. If you are planning on getting a bunny and you have a dog, the dog should probably be trained or maybe start out with teaching the dog to not hurt your little critter. She loves to be gently massaged on the ears and sometimes gentle strokes. Right now my bunny is playing and running around. I make sure I feed her good amounts of food (unlimited hay and pellets, certain vegetables and fruits but don't give them too much and I don't prefer giving them collie flower) and hang out with her daily. and please do research before getting a rabbit because you wouldn't want anything bad to happen... Hi Hayley just convince her how easy they are to keep or show her how well you can look after something else. You hopefully, probably will get one in the end, I did for my 12th birthday. My Mum likes after a bunny and her baby bunny litter for a friend and grew to love them. She later purchased two from the litter, which are now my little sisters bunnies, Harry and Jasper, and noticed how well i looked after them while my Mums friend was on holiday and knew I really missed them. My birthday was coming up, and she bought me darling Bangel, and fell in love with her, bought herself one, bred them, bought two more for breeding purposes and while she was buying Harry and Jasper of her friend, was told about a adult bunny who she had sold a year ago but had come back to her because the owner was sadly badly allergic. She bought the rabbit, and we names her Sally. At the end of the year, before we knew it, we had 21 rabbits and counting! My mum wasn't a animal hoarder, but Harry and Jasper had babies with Bangel when they were very young accidentally, and at the same time Sally and Blossom had very very large litters. It was an amazing summer..... Hope you best Hayley, though you probably did not find this interesting.. :)

Oh, and an update on my last comment... I found out that my mum had bred Bangel one final litter before we spayed her. She had been , they thought, unhappy since her first and the last litter, and thought her being pregnant would make her happy. Three weeks into pregnancy, she is now a very happy bunny, I guess it's because rabbits can be grumpy and hormonal to begin with. :) I'm very excited, and will have some 'grandchildren ' just before the end of the summer!!!

thanks, this was really useful. My bunny Bangel always nibbles me, but some day ago she was nibbling me, and at the same time ruining my clothes, (poor little girl!) and the next thing I knew I had a stinging chest and found tiny tooth mark there. It hurt and when I told my family, they said I had to get rid of sweet little Bangel. Bangel is an unusual rabbit, she can be quite grumpy with everyone and rips up her hutch but is still friendly with me, yet Im still nervous about picking her up. When I open her hutch and sit on the floor with door open next to it, she hops onto my lap, puts her paws up on me and hops away around the garage. She litters everywhere and wondering if that is marking her territory or if she feels nervous around me. She will some times lie stretched out in the middle of the garage floor and she started a month or two ago to almost seem to like, or at least, not be bothered with me stroking her head while she eats. She used to do Binkies in the run all the time, but she doesnt now, maybe its the dramatic change in weather, since moving up to the west coast. I hope she loves me and is enjoying life, but I still have doubts. Any help anyone?

I'm the adopted mommy of a cottontail rabbit. His name is Waffle. I've never owned rabbits so I thought waffle was nibbling and licking me and bouncing around all crazy like cause he was missing the outside. He's got about a week of rehab left. My dear Waffle loves me apparently. This excites me because I'm trying to be the best mommy I can since my neighbor's pit ate the rest of his family. :/

Hi rabbit girl....just be carefull when your rabbit nibbles your hair, rabbits have a habit of eating hair and it can cause furballs in their stomach which can lead to ill health..the best way to combat this is to groom your rabbit in order to limit the hair it can swallow when grooming itself and try and keep an eye on whether it is eating your hair when grooming you..you seem to have a very happy bunny who clearly loves you...but a furball does not make for a happy bunny or a healthy bunny.

I was wondering why my 1 month old bunny is always nibbling on my shirt. Does it count with hair? My bunny seems to nibble my hair a lot. Also my bunny lets me hold it like a baby when his tummy is facing me. At first I thought my bunny was mad at me when he softly nibbles me but he trusts/likes me!! Sweet! Thanks.

this was so helpful! I recently adopted a dwarf bunny and he kept "poking" me with his nose and nibbling my fingers. For a while I thought he missed his original home and hated me.

Thank you for this - we have a lionhead rabbit which is a buck (4 months old) and he is doing all these things after three weeks with us. The laying out is really funny because he lies like a dog on his side, feet apart and head on its side!! He nudges us and has started to allow us to stroke his head and nose, but not always but we are getting there.

I love this site. I rescued a wild brown baby bunny (she's 2 months old now) & she's doing great. I got really lucky because only 10% of wild bunnies survive in captivity.
