Everyone expects Garoppolo to be traded before the start of the season, and if he ends up in Carolina or Seattle he may just earn a starting job again. If that happens, Garoppolo would be a solid backup in standard leagues and a quality QB2 in leagues where you can start more than one. If Garoppolo remains in San Francisco, we'd expect him to back up Trey Lance, and remain on the waiver wire in all but the deepest of 2QB leagues.

Who is the 49ers quarterback

  • Garoppolo (shoulder) went through a throwing regimen on a side field at the same time as the 49ers practiced Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The roughly hour-long session included a variety of passes, including up to 50 yards in the air and numerous 25-yarders while rolling out to the left and right. GM John Lynch noted that Garoppolo is "doing a really job (of) building his stamina in his throwing program that was prescribed all along and working out really strongly and aggressively." After undergoing surgery March 8 to address a torn capsule in his right throwing shoulder, Garoppolo reported to training camp last Tuesday and promptly passed a physical. At the same time, coach Kyle Shanahan announced the 49ers were moving on from Garoppolo to 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance under center, making the veteran QB available via trade.

  • Garoppolo passed his physical Tuesday, which means he has recovered from his shoulder injury, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Garoppolo is healthy again after undergoing shoulder surgery March 8. The quarterback passing his physical should allow the 49ers to ramp up trade talks involving Garoppolo, but San Francisco has already made it clear that the veteran signal-caller isn't part of the team's future, as the 49ers plan to build around 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance under center.

  • Coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with Garoppolo (shoulder) on Tuesday and confirmed afterward that the 49ers have moved on to Trey Lance as their quarterback, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that Shanahan doesn't plan on Garoppolo practicing with the team this summer while the 49ers figure out details of a trade or release. Candidates for the 30-year-old's services include the Texans and Seahawks.

  • Coach Kyle Shanahan told Tim Kawakami on The TK Show on Monday that he expects Garoppolo (shoulder) to report to training camp Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The entire 49ers roster is required to report to camp Tuesday, and Garoppolo will be among his current teammates, likely just for the typical physical and nothing else. Shanahan has made the transition from Garoppolo to second-year pro Trey Lance under center this offseason, which was helped by the fact Garoppolo spent most of it in recovery mode from March surgery to address his right throwing shoulder. Garoppolo resumed throwing in early July, and there's hope he'll receive medical clearance by mid-August. His representatives have been given permission to seek a trade, and per Matt Barrows of The Athletic interested teams include the Browns, Seahawks and Texans.

  • The 49ers have given Garoppolo's agents permission to seek a trade now that the veteran quarterback has been cleared to start practicing, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Garoppolo may need more time to build up his arm strength after offseason surgery on his right shoulder, but he's at least been deemed healthy enough to practice. With the 49ers ready to turn to Trey Lance under center, a trade makes the most sense for all parties, though Garoppolo's considerable salary is another complicating factor on top of the shoulder surgery. Matt Barrows of The Athletic recently mentioned Seattle, Cleveland and Houston as possible destinations for the 30-year-old quarterback.
