The Dreamworks animated film The Bad Guys has revealed its official streaming date, which will be July 1st. Viewers will be able to find The Bad Guys on Peacock starting on that same date, for no extra cost. The Bad Guys was released in theaters on April 22nd, and earned approximately $238 million worldwide. The critical reception of the film was generally middling-to-positive, with viewers appreciating the heist film satire and thematic arc about learning the values of kindness and good behavior as antithesis to the "coolness" of bad guys, which has become so en vogue in the 21st century.

The Bad Guys features the voicework of Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Richard Ayoade, Barbara Goodson, Zazie Beets, Alex Borstein, and Lilly Singh. THR's review states that the film may not be a revolutionary work of animated storytelling, but it's solid enough to be a good popcorn flick for the family:

For much of the way, The Bad Guys is antic fun, aided immeasurably by the terrific vocal performances. The ensemble includes many well-known names, but unlike so many celebrities cast in animated films purely for their star value, they actually deliver vivid characterizations that go beyond being recognizable voices. Rockwell's sly delivery proves consistently delightful, Snake's flirty banter with Beetz's Foxington giving Clooney and Roberts a run for their money. Maron is so perfectly cast as the grouchy, self-loathing snake you wonder why the character doesn't have glasses and a moustache. Even the minor roles are impeccably performed, with Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) in hilarious full-bluster mode as the gang's police chief nemesis.

The brightly colored computer animation fairly pops, and Daniel Pemberton's zippy music would feel perfectly at home in a live-action caper film. While The Bad Guys ultimately lacks the sophistication and emotional resonance to make it anything more than a harmless diversion, it offers plenty of fun along the way.

Here is the synopsis for The Bad Guys:

Basking in the glory of their success, Mr Wolf's notorious Bad Guys are unequalled in thievery. However, all good things must come to an end, and for the first time in a long while, someone manages to outsmart the city's most-wanted villains during an audacious heist. Now, as charm alone isn't going to cut it, the humiliated crime squad must do the unthinkable: rehabilitate for freedom's sake and give goodness a second chance. However, can a leopard change its spots? What will it take the unrepentant Bad Guys to become law-abiding citizens?

“The Bad Guys” is here. Based on the Aaron Blabey book series of the same name, the new film hails from DreamWorks Animation and brings a ragtag crew of, well, bad guys to life. Bad guys who just may find themselves turning good over the course of one big heist. The film boasts a unique animation style and an impressive ensemble voice cast, but many may be wondering, how do you watch “The Bad Guys?” Is this family film readily available at home, or is a theater visit on your calendar?

We answer those questions and more below.

“The Bad Guys” came out on April 22.

What Is “The Bad Guys” About?

Never have there been five friends as infamous as The Bad Guys—dashing pickpocket Mr. Wolf, seen-it-all safecracker Mr. Snake, chill master-of-disguise Mr. Shark, short-fused “muscle” Mr. Piranha and sharp-tongued expert hacker Ms. Tarantula, aka “Webs.”

But when, after years of countless heists and being the world’s most-wanted villains, the gang is finally caught, Mr. Wolf brokers a deal (that he has no intention of keeping) to save them all from prison: The Bad Guys will go good.

Under the tutelage of their mentor Professor Marmalade an arrogant (but adorable!) guinea pig, The Bad Guys set out to fool the world that they’ve been transformed. Along the way, though, Mr. Wolf begins to suspect that doing good for real may give him what he’s always secretly longed for: acceptance. So when a new villain threatens the city, can Mr. Wolf persuade the rest of the gang to become … The Good Guys?

It’s the villain’s turn to shine in Universal Dreamworks’ new animated feature, The Bad Guys, which opens in theaters this weekend.

Essentially The Suicide Squad for kids, The Bad Guys is directed by Pierre Perifel, with a screenplay from Etan Cohen, who adapted the film from the children’s book series of the same name by Aaron Blabey. Sam Rockwell takes the lead as the voice of Mr. Wolf, the leader of a pack of criminal animals to decide to pretend to reform their villainous ways. But what happens when it turns out these bad dogs actually want to be good boys?

Also starring Marc Maron, Anthony Ramos, Craig Robinson, Awkwafina, Richard Ayoade, Zazie Beetz, Lilly Singh, and Alex Borstein in voice roles, The Bad Guys is sure to keep kids entertained and adults half-heartedly laughing.

Right now, the only place to watch The Bad Guys is at a movie theater, but you won’t have to wait long to catch the film on streaming. Read on to find out how to watch The Bad Guys and when to expect The Bad Guys streaming on Peacock and Netflix.

WHERE TO WATCH THE BAD GUYS:

For now, the only way to watch The Bad Guys is to go to a movie theater. The Bad Guys will open in theaters in the U.S on April 22, 2022. You can find tickets at a theater near you here.

After the movie’s theatrical run, you will be able to stream The Bad Guys on Peacock, the NBC Universal streaming service, and then, eventually, on Netflix. You’ll also be able to rent The Bad Guys on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, iTunes, YouTube, Google Play, and more.

WILL THE BAD GUYS BE ON HBO MAX?

No. The Bad Guys is a Universal Pictures movie, not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be streaming on HBO Max when it opens in theaters. Also, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. Last year, Warner Media opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.

WHEN WILL THE BAD GUYS BE STREAMING? WHEN WILL THE BAD GUYS BE ON PEACOCK?

While there is not an official Peacock release date for The Bad Guys, we can expect The Bad Guys to be on the streaming service after 45 days in theaters. Therefore, you should see The Bad Guys on Peacock as early as mid-June 2022. This is because, starting with the 2022 film slate, Universal movies will come to Peacock Premium as soon as 45 days after opening in theaters. (That said, it could be later than 45 days.)

The Bad Guyswill stream exclusively on Peacock for four months.

IS THE BAD GUYS ON NETFLIX?

Not yet. However, The Bad Guys will be on Netflix after its four-month run on Peacock, thanks to a long-running deal between Netflix and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group that gives Netflix exclusive rights in the U.S. to the media company’s animated feature films. Therefore, you can expect to see The Bad Guys on Netflix around October or November 2022, depending on when the film launches on Peacock.

You will also be able to rent The Bad Guys on VOD, but it’s less clear when that will be. Recent Universal movies No Time To Die and The 355 both landed on VOD about one month after opening in theaters. If The Bad Guys follows a similar pattern, you can expect to be able to rent the movie for $20 on VOD in late May 2022.

That said, other Universal movies, like the M. Night Shyamalan thriller Old, took over two months to release on digital, so take this estimate with a grain of salt

All this is to say: We don’t know when The Bad Guys will be on VOD. Stay tuned for more information.
