The Open Food Network is on a mission to build a new food system that is fair, local, and transparent. “We want to power a world where fair, open food & farming networks (re)connect people and regenerate the earth.” We believe that it is possible to create a food system with social and ecological health at its core and work closely with stakeholders around the world to make it happen. Our software platform makes it easy for anyone to set up and manage an online farmers market or store. This software platform is now used by more than 7000 producers in over 20 countries around the world. Open Food Network also works to empower enterprises in the community food enterprise sector. This includes research, developing resources for community food enterprises and a global software commons that makes it easy for other organisations to replicate the work that we have done.
“For years I have been writing about the need for a fairer, more sustainable food distribution system. It appears that we now have it. The online, open source, not-for-profit Open Food Network is owned and controlled by the people who grow, rear, process and eat the food. It is providing a growing Network of food and drink producers and small-scale retailers with a rich variety of routes to market that enable transparency for the shoppers and buyers along with maximum returns to the people who are producing our food. Are supermarkets’ days numbered?”
