What is arcane in bloodborne

So a weapon like the blade of mercy or burial blade with good arcane scaling only scales with arcane when it has a gemstone that makes it arcane? So without a arcane gemstone in it, it skills just by skill and strength? Am I getting this right?

These weapons are SKILLZ and ARCANE already.

Yeah I know that but do they just scale off of skill until you get an arcane gemstone?

No they scale of Skill and Arcane. Both of the stats.

So do i bring em both to 25 or just go straight 50 skill first?

All we ever see of stars is their old photographs.

The Skill Stat is more important for both Blades of Mercy and Burial Blade. 50 Skill > 25/25.

You won't benefit from the arcane scaling unless you equip a rune that gives the weapon arcane damage. Doesn't matter if the weapon scales with arcane unless it does arcane damage.

The Burial Blade and Blades of Mercy already have arcane damage on the weapons.

Weapons with innate arcane damage (Burial Blade, Blades of Mercy, Tonitrus) do arcane damage and that damage scales with the arcane stat when you "2h" the weapon.

Weapons with no innate arcane damage yet arcane scaling only gain elemental damage when you socket them with a bloodgem that adds (completely transforms the physical damage into) elemental damage, which then scales with only arcane.

Looks like blade of mercy and burial blade have split damage which means you can't slot a fire or bolt gem and convert the physical damage to elemental. I don't know if there's a strict arcane gem or what effect it would have on these weapons, but elemental gems aren't going to help you with them. They're skill weapons with a tiny bit of arcane damage. Looks like the arcane damage is only applied on certain attacks. Like look at the blade of mercy when the blades have a blue arc when you swing (like transformed R2s and attacks coming out of rolls). So even if you tried to pump the arcane side of it, you're only really going to bump up the damage on those certain attacks it looks like.

I know this is a very popular question but what exactly does it all affect? Is it used mostly for the hunter tools or for the elemental boosts?
I know people recommend getting the fire gem after BSB but what exactly does that do? Sorry I know almost nothing about this game lol.

*Angriest Meowing*In any case, we should at least go over why Arcane's so badass. All Weapons in the game have a Scaling. As you may already know, levelling the same stat that the weapon Scales with will add extra damage. Strength and Skill govern Physical Attack.Bloodtinge governs Blood Attack. And finally, Arcane governs Fire, Bolt, and Arc Attack. I'll say Arcane as the stat and Arc as the Damage type, the two are related, but not the same thing. On top of this, your Weapon also has three Blood Gem Slots in it. In Bloodborne, most of your Damage on your Weapon will come from it's Blood Gems, with a nice boost coming from levelling your Stats. Many of the weapons in the game have an Arcane Scaling to begin with. The only weapons that don't are Bloodletter, Chikage, Simon's Bowblade, Reiterpallasch, and Rifle Spear. These are Bloodtinge Weapons. Every other Weapon in the game is either Purely Physical, or does Split Damage. Split Damage Weapons have a Physical Damage Stat which Scales with Strength, Skill, or Both and an Elemental Damage Stat which can be Fire, Bolt, or Arc, all of three of which scale with Arcane. The only exception is the Kos Parasite, a pure Arc weapon. It is worth noting that the Arcane Scaling on most if not all weapons is half of it's Physical Scaling. On a Pure Arcane Build, I suggest neither any of the Split Damage Weapons, nor any of the Bloodtinge Weapons. Pure Physical Weapons are the best. When you place a Blood Gem that adds Fire, Bolt, or Arc Damage, the Physical Attack of the Weapon will be lost. And it will instead be replaced by a Elemental/Arc version. For example, let's say you have a Saw Cleaver at +10. It has 180 Base Physical Damage and 20 extra Attack from Scaling. You put a Fire Gem in it. It loses the 180 Base Physical Attack and 20 Physical Attack Scaling. It now gains 180 Base Fire Attack and the Scaling now depends on your Arcane stat rather than Strength or Skill.Pure Physical Weapons are best for this, as Split Damage weapons don't shine unless you have all the stats the weapon scales with, and Bloodtinge Builds don't use Arcane.Nothing in the game is strong against Fire, Bolt and Arc at once. They'll always have a weakness you can exploit, and it reaches broken heights to the point that a Saw Cleaver can do 1K Damage to Beasts per R1 and a bit less to everyone else. And finally, we have the Hunter Tools. The main ones I'd like say, are Executioner's Gloves, Black Sky Eye, Beast Roar, Augur of Ebrietas and sometimes a Call Beyond. All of the Arcane Tools that do Damage scale very well up to 99, which means they can do monstrous damage.Beast Roar is the only Tool here that does no damage. But it has a knock-back effect on anything around you. Excellent for getting foes off ya' if you're surrounded, and it's also nice for knocking down single humanoid targets like Hunters or losers like Keeper of the Old Lords and Micolash, which'll give you a second or two to recover Stamina.EG's do Burst Damage, three projectiles that home in on your target. BSE is a single-target ranged projectile with High Stagger. Augur is a close-mid range attack that can Backstab/Parry Enemies and has a knock down effect on Humans. A Call Beyond is a ranged nuke that takes a couple seconds to launch, but can do some nice damage.

These Tools give you enough power to crush everything. You can effectively lower their costs with Blood Bullets. A Call Beyond is the most expensive, costing 7. If you make Blood Bullets before each cast, you can use it 10 times instead of 2. Blood Bullets are indispensible for an Arcane Build and make it all the more broken.

Wow thanks so much! This is exactly what I needed.

I really like Ludwig's holy blade, but would it be good for an arcane build? Should I just stick with the saw cleaver?

Lolwigs has the highest Arcane Scaling of all the Pure Phys Weapons. Make it elemental if your Arc is 40+. If not, go Physical.

I dunno what you're talking about. I've heard of an Ocelot from Metal Gear, but I've never played 'em.

What does he do?

I just got my Arcane to 40+ (just shut my game off, so I can't check), and tentacle rape is amazing. It's one-shotting Executioners at the cost of only 1 bullet. Since tentacles don't hit more than one enemy at once, the Executioner's Gauntlets help me take out groups of advancing enemies. And the flamesprayer is handy as ever. Getting the tentacles turned this build from generic "imma dump points into health" to god tier. And to think it's only gonna get better. :)
I still need some gems to convert my cleaver and spear to elemental. I'll get those tomorrow.

Does anyone know why the Whirligig Saw has arcane scaling? I keep improving my arcane stat but its damage output doesn't improve.
