There’s no shortage of exciting new options on Netflix. If you’re in the mood for a classic network procedural, you’ll definitely want to press play on the Manuel Garcia-Rulfo-led legal thriller The Lincoln Lawyer. If you’re looking for a star-studded comedy, Rebel Wilson, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Mary Holland, and Chris Parnell strut their stuff in the lighthearted film Senior Year. But if you’re interested in devouring a Mexican mystery thriller, the third and final season of Who Killed Sara? is about to debut on Netflix.

Premiering in March of 2021 on the streamer, Season 3 of the popular series centers on Alex finally receiving an answer to the question that has tormented him for years: What time will Who Killed Sara? Season 3 arrive on Netflix?

Wait, no. That’s Decider’s question. Alex’s question is “What really happened to Sara?” Regardless, all of our questions are about to be answered. What time will the third season of Who Killed Sara? debut on Netflix? Here’s everything you need to know.

If you're curious about Who Killed Sara? season 3 (¿Quién Mató a Sara? in Spanish), you've come to the right place.

It's not entirely clear what happened to Sara Guzmán—or what she was masking underneath that facade—but we're certainly dying to find out in the upcoming third season. The crime drama has us completely engrossed, and we're channeling our inner detective (so many theories!), especially now that we have a release date.

Who Killed Sara? premiered back in late March 2021 and after an explosive ending (we've got the cheat sheet for the Who Killed Sara? season 1 ending if you need a reminder), it was quickly followed up with season two in mid-May (yes, with another cliffhanger finale).

The killer (no pun intended) Who Killed Sara? cast helped make the Mexican show a hit, with an estimated 55 million viewers tuning in since it first premiered—which is why we're so excited for season 2...

Netflix has officially confirmed Who Killed Sara? will return on Wednesday, May 18—so set your reminders! We're very happy to know there will be more drama following that Who Killed Sara? season 2 ending, especially to wrap up some of those loose ends and answer all of our questions.

We finished off the second season with not one but two people revealing themselves as Sara's killers, so our guess is that season three of Who Killed Sara? will explore the true author(s) of the crime.

Some wild fan theories are even suggesting that Sara could still be alive (à la Cesar) but we think the storyline will likely focus on Nicandro and his shady business with the doctor.

But if you were hoping the cast would spill any secrets, think again. Carolina Miranda (Elisa) told Esquire (opens in new tab) not even her mother has privileges. "Everybody tells me, at a party, like we are drinking and when they see that I'm having fun, it's like, 'Oh, by the way—who killed Sara?'"

"And it's like, come on, I can't say anything. My mother would say to me too. Like, 'I'm your mother. You need to tell me because I'm your mother.' [Laughs].'No, mother, come on, it's my work!'"

Who is in the 'Who Killed Sara?' season 3 cast?

Season three will see the return of all of the show's main stars, including Manolo Cardona (as Alex), Ximena Lamadrid (Sara), Alejandro Nones (Rodolfo Lazcano), Ginés García Millán (César), Claudia Ramírez (Mariana Lazcano), Carolina Miranda ( Elisa Lazcano), Eugenio Siller (José María Lazcano), Marifer (Litzy), and Matías Novoa (Nicandro).

The third season of Who Killed Sara has premiered on Netflix and it will be the last, as Netflix executives have said in interviews that after this point, series attract far fewer subscribers.

What is notable about this series is that it was named the eighth most watched show on the streamer in 2021.

Convoluted plot

For the first two seasons Alex investigates the murder of his sister, in a way that suggests the plan was not to drag the plot out too long.

So to get to the truth in concluding what happened he is introduced to a sinister company that appears to be kidnapping people and performing sinister medical experiments on them.

Recurrently different stories have been presented in relation to Sara's untimely death, so to get to the denouement will be no exception.

In the second season, it was posited that Marifer had murdered Sara by cutting the parachute straps. However, it is discovered that the main character did not die in the paragliding accident as had been led to believe.

Between experiments and murder

Sara survived and was kidnapped by Reinaldo who took her to the "Medusa Center". There, like many others, she was used as laboratory rats in order to find a cure for schizophrenia and to subject homosexuals to conversion therapy.

As Sara had shown some signs of schizophrenia, her case made her a suitable candidate for studies.

On the other hand, despite shooting several people at the Medusa Center, Alex manages to move on with his life with Elisa and Lucia (Sara's almost identical daughter that she had with Cesar).

He also manages to take revenge on the person who murdered Sara, as he manages to kill Reinaldo through an intense electroshock therapy.

Meanwhile, Cesar takes the blame for Abel's death, but it is also revealed that he has pancreatic cancer and will die soon.

Who Killed Sara? Season 3 has now been released onto Netflix—and will be the final set of episodes for the Spanish-language show.

Netflix released the first set of episodes for ¿Quién mató a Sara? in March 2021, and the show was such a hit that they released Season 2 just two months later. Season 3 now comes to bring the story to an end a year later.

When the Who Killed Sara? Season 3 trailer was released, it was announced that it would be the final season of the show. This is despite the show being named the eighth most watched show on the streamer in 2021.

Here's why the Netflix show is coming to an end this May.

Why Is 'Who Killed Sara?' Ending?

Promo image for "Who Killed Sara?" The show is ending after three seasons.Netflix

There are two main seasons for the show coming to an end when it is. The first is plot-driven, and the second is a wider Netflix trend.

A show like Who Killed Sara? that is based on one central question can only go so long without answering that question. Wait too long, and you risk the audience becoming impatient and/or the writers tying themselves in knots trying to introduce twist after twist to hide the answer.

So it is with ¿Quién mató a Sara? The first two seasons burned through plot and suspects as Alex (Manolo Cardona) investigates his sister's murder, in a way that suggests the plan was not to have the show run and run.

Season 3 widens the investigation even more by introducing a sinister company that appears to be kidnapping people and performing sinister medical experiments on them. Either this is one last red herring (no spoilers here), or the show has introduced the final piece that will explain who killed Sara.

We also cannot discount that only the biggest Netflix shows go past three seasons. Netflix execs have said in interviews that after this point, series bring in far fewer subscribers—and as Netflix's recent misfortunes have shown, growing subscriber numbers is crucial to their business.

Only the true Netflix breakthrough hits (the ones that get the most publicity) make it past Season 3. Examples include Stranger Things, The Crown and Bridgerton. Non-English language series have an even harder job going past Season 3. Of Netflix's current non-English programming line-up, only Elite has made it past that point.

Generally, it is the first shows in a given language that last the longest. So it has proved with Spanish content. The first Spanish-language Netflix original was Club de Cuervos, which ran for four seasons, while the fourth Spanish show Cable Girls made it to five.

Those three shows (Elite, Club de Cuervos and Cable Girls), however, are the only Spanish Netflix original dramas to make it to Season 4 or beyond. Even Season 3 is a high watermark for Netflix Spanish content—only Who Killed Sara?, The House of Flowers and High Seas have got there so far, with Valeria, Control Z, Daughter from Another Mother and Sky Rojo all renewed for Season 3s that have not aired yet.

Even Money Heist, perhaps the biggest Spanish-language hit Netflix has had yet, only made it to Season 3 (though episodes were split into five parts)—and Netflix was only responsible for the final two seasons after taking it over from Antena 3.

While viewers will not know who killed Sara until the end of the series, it seems it was the realities of the streaming model that killed Who Killed Sara?

Who Killed Sara? / ¿Quién mató a Sara? Seasons 1 to 3 are streaming now on Netflix.
