Is a supra faster than a Hellcat?

The Dodge Challenger is typically locked in battle with the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro for the muscle car crown. However, if you want a fast, attainable coupe, your options extend beyond the muscle segment. The 2022 Toyota Supra is swift, tight, and refined. In the unlikely comparison of a 2022 Dodge Challenger and a 2022 Toyota Supra, which car comes out on top?

In base model format, the 2022 Toyota Supra 2.0 is much quicker than the 2022 Dodge Challenger. With just over 300 horsepower, the Challenger SXT lacks the grunt necessary to move its colossal weight. However, the Supra 2.0 is light and nimble. While 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque might not seem like a cascade of power, it is more than sufficient to motivate the Supra 2.0 to sixty in just 4.9 seconds.

The news doesn’t get any better for Dodge fans at higher trims if you’re comparing the vehicles based on price points. With its monstrous naturally-aspirated 6.4L V8, the potent Dodge Challenger Scat Pack produces 485 horsepower and will sprint to sixty in just over four seconds. However, the comparably priced Toyota Supra 3.0 makes 382 horsepower, which is more than enough to beat the big Dodge. The Supra 3.0 can dash to sixty in just 3.8 seconds.

However, it should be said that if money is no issue, the Dodge Challenger has more to offer. Although it will cost shoppers far more than a Supra 3.0, the 2022 Dodge Challenger Hellcat line offers horsepower figures starting at 717. Car and Driver recommends the Hellcat Redeye Widebody, which will smash a run to sixty in just 3.6 seconds.

Which car is more expensive?

At the bottom of the trim levels, the 2022 Dodge Challenger SXT is cheaper to acquire than a Toyota Supra 2.0. Specifically, the SXT has a starting MSRP of $32,025, while the Supra 2.0 will set you back $44,565. However, the Supra 2.0 is a lighter, more efficient, and faster sports car.

Comparing the Scat Pack and the Toyota Supra 3.0 is a more apt proposal. According to TrueCar, the Supra 3.0 has a starting MSRP of $52,915. Similarly, a Challenger Scat Pack will set you back a starting price of $45,750, or $51,745 for the Widebody.

Should you buy a Challenger or a Supra?

Comparing a 2022 Dodge Challenger and a Toyota Supra is like comparing a baseball and a paper airplane. Both items move through the air, but that’s about it for the similarities. On the one hand, the Challenger is a brute with engine options that will push above 800 horsepower. On the other hand, the Supra 3.0 is a finely tuned instrument of lightness and engineering.

There's very little in common between the Toyota Supra and Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Both cars feature engines in the front driving wheels at the back, and these specific vehicles run eight-speed automatic transmissions. At a glance, that seems like plenty of common ground. But we all know the Toyota doesn't stand a chance in a straight-line race. And yet, here it is.

If by chance you don't know what's happening under the hood of these cars, here's a refresher. The Challenger SRT Hellcat packs a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that, in this particular year and spec, belts out 707 horsepower (527 kilowatts). As for the Supra, a stock model with the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six is good for 382 hp (285 kW), or 335 hp (250 kW) in 2020 models.

In this case, stock is irrelevant because the Supra featured here is modified to around 500 hp (373 kW). The Hellcat is stock, but it still holds a 200-hp (149-kW) advantage over the Toyota. Then again, the two-seat Supra is considerably lighter at around 3,300 pounds versus a beefy 4,400 in the Dodge. It's a very familiar story of weight-versus-power, but this time around, the differences culminate in some shockingly close racing. From a standstill, anyway.

We're treated to three dig races and three from a roll, and both drivers are on point for the showdown. The first race sees the Supra whip the Challenger off the line, but the steamrolling power of the Hellcat just can't be stopped. It charges past to claim a win for American muscle, but the Supra isn't very far behind.

Here's where it gets really interesting. The second race sees the Supra leap to a very healthy lead. It's clearly better at launching and traction management, but this time the screaming six-pot manages to hold the Hellcat at bay just long enough to cross the finish line first. And we do mean just – another eye blink and the Supra would've seen Challenger taillights. It wasn't a fluke either, as the third dig race sees both cars cross the line in a dead heat. Drag racing doesn't get much better than this.

Things aren't quite as competitive from a roll. With the Challenger's mass already in motion, it easily pulls away from the Supra in each matchup. So word to the wise, Toyota fans. Head to the drag strip and make the most of your weight advantage if you want to challenge a Hellcat. Also, a few power upgrades don't hurt, either.

What’s better than a street race (in Mexico, of course)? A close street race that pits two nearly equal participants in a nail-biting contest of speed and guts. That’s what we have here; two cars that are very evenly matched. One is bone stock (except for tires) and the other is minimally modified with only a cat-less downpipe. Without further ado, let’s get down to where the rubber meets the road.

The big Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye features a 6.2-liter HEMI engine with a massive supercharger on top. Despite the fact that the rear-wheel drive Challenger Hellcat Redeye has the potential to make 797hp and 707 lb.-ft. of torque, it tips the scale at an enormous 4,514-pounds. Dodge says that this model can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7-seconds and turn the quarter-mile in 11.3-seconds @ 128 mph.

Manufactured by BMW, the 2020 Toyota Supra is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine. While the Supra is only rated at 335hp, it also weighs in at just 3,397-pounds. That’s over 1,200-pounds less than the Challenger Hellcat Redeye. The Gen VI Supra can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8-seconds and get through the quarter-mile in 12.3-seconds @ 113 mph. This car has a modified exhaust system.

On the agenda for this evening are a pair of roll racing hits. The first begins at 40 mph and the second starts at 50 mph. You don’t want to miss this one. It’s as close as they come.
