How to find a blue axolotl in minecraft

By following this guide, you will be able to get a Blue Axolotl in Minecraft 1.17.1. You have to follow a few steps along with the command, which will enable you to spawn a blue one for sure.

Blue Axolotl would spawn naturally in Minecraft, but it is very rare in the game. So you have to breed two axolotls. To do this, you need a big pond and ensure that the axolotls won’t go to the ocean.

You have to find an area that has a cluster of tropical fishes. Now take your bucket out and catch them.

After that, take them to axolotls and feed them.

After breeding, the baby has characteristics of one of the parents. So in the event that you keep reproducing them at an exceptionally uncommon possibility that the blue one will spawn. The Blue Axolotl is quite possibly the most uncommon thing in Minecraft.

But you can spawn the Blue Axolotl in Minecraft by typing a command.

Just type the command given below:

/summon minecraft;axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:4}

And you will be able to spawn a Blue Axolotl in Minecraft.

Want to know how to breed Axolotls in Minecraft? Then get your fishing hat on and your buckets at the ready, as we’ll explain everything that you need to know to get the aquatic mob loved up. This guide will also cover how to get the rare blue Axolotl, so that you can head back to the village and brag to all of your friends.

How to tame and breed Axolotls in Minecraft

You cannot tame an Axolotl, but you can force it to breed with another Axolotl to produce a baby.

To get two Axolotls to breed, you need to get them near each other, and feed each of them a Bucket of Tropical Fish to get them to enter "Love Mode". At this point they will breed with one another, producing a baby Axolotl. This is the same process by which you can breed many other animals, such as Foxes.

Baby Axolotls will follow their parents until fully grown, which happens 20 minutes after birth. You can speed up the journey to adulthood by feeding the baby more Buckets of Tropical Fish.

You can also lead an Axolotl in a direction by approaching it and holding a Bucket of Tropical Fish in your hand, much like how a Pig will follow a carrot on a stick. This will help you when it comes to getting both Axolotls in the same place ready for breeding.

Note: Tropical Fish on its own does not do anything. You need to use a Bucket of Tropical Fish to have any effect on nearby Axolotls.

How to get a Blue Axolotl

As of Minecraft version 1.17.1, the only way you can get a Blue Axolotl without using commands is by breeding one.

There are five different colors of Axolotl: pink, brown, gold, cyan, and blue. The baby Axolotl will usually take after one of its parents in colour, but there is a 1 in 1,200 (0.083%) chance that it will instead become a rare Blue Axolotl.

The colour has no effect on the creature itself. All Axolotl are functionally and behaviourally identical; even the ultra-rare blue variant has nothing which sets it apart from the other types besides its hue.

Of course, there are probably already dozens of texture packs which will change Axolotl colours to whatever the author likes.

How to spawn a Blue Axolotl using commands

To spawn a Blue Axolotl using commands in Java Edition, type the following into the console:

/summon axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:4}

To spawn a Blue Axolotl using commands in Bedrock Edition, here's what you need to type into the console:

/summon axolotl ~ ~ ~ minecraft:entity_born

Both of these will specifically spawn a Blue Axolotl rather than any of the other colours. So if you're happy to use cheats to get your hands on the rarest Axolotl type, these commands are all you need.

Axolotl behaviour explained

Axolotls are naturally passive towards players but hostile towards all aquatic mobs except dolphins and turtles. If damaged, there is a high chance that an Axolotl will play dead, so don't expect them to help you fight the Wither boss or Slimes. During this time it will heal any hit points lost, and it cannot be attacked by other mobs.

Axolotls can be attached to leads, and they can also be picked up in a Bucket of Water. An Axolotl that is picked up in this way, and then released later on, will never de-spawn, so that's a great way to fill up a moat around your castle or towers.

Where do Axolotls spawn?

Axolotls spawn mostly in underwater caves in any biome, so they're not so rare that you'll need to hunt for a specific Minecraft seed in order to see one. The exact rules for their spawning are as follows:

  • They must spawn in a water block below Y-level 63;
  • There must be a solid block of some sort above where it spawns;
  • They can only spawn in pitch darkness (Light Level 0);
  • They can only spawn within 5 blocks of a stone-type block (Stone, Deepslate, Granite, Diorite, Andesite, or Tuff).

This may seem like a fair few criteria, but Axolotls aren't an uncommon sight in Minecraft 1.17, particularly if you're in a very coastal location. Of course, if you really want to see one, you can always spawn one in Creative Mode using an Axolotl Egg. Just don't expect to find any blue Axolotls using this method, because as I mentioned above, blue variants are only spawned through breeding since the 1.17.1 update.

That's everything you need to know about finding, taming, and breeding Axolotls in Minecraft 1.17. Be sure to brush up on your knowledge of other 1.17 additions with our pages on how to find and use Copper, how to make Candles, and how to find and use Amethyst. Or take a look ahead and see what's coming with 1.18 and the other half of the Caves and Cliffs update, such as Dripstone. Looking ahead to 2022, you can expect The Wild Update to bring frogs, the mangrove swamp, and the Allay.

An axolotl is a passive aquatic mob endemic to the lush caves biome that hunts most other aquatic mobs.

Spawning

Axolotls spawn underwater in the lush caves biome and when there is a clay block less than five blocks below the spawning space.

Colors

Axolotls can be one of five colors: pink (leucistic), brown, gold, cyan and blue.

When breeding Axolotls, there is a 1⁄1200 (0.083%) chance of the offspring having the blue mutation, leaving 1199⁄1200 (99.917%) chance of matching one of the parents (including blue parents).

Behavior

Axolotls are passive toward players and can be attached to leads. Axolotls give Regeneration I for 100 game ticks (5 seconds) per Axolotl in the fight, up to a duration of 2400 game ticks (2 minutes)‌[Java Edition only], and remove Mining Fatigue when a player kills a mob that is in combat with an axolotl.

Axolotls attack all aquatic mobs except turtles, dolphins, frogs and other axolotls. They also attack drowned. An axolotl deals 2 points of damage per attack.

After killing a non-hostile mob, there is a two minute cooldown before another non-hostile mob can be hunted. Axolotls prioritize attacking hostile mobs over non-hostile mobs.

If an axolotl takes damage underwater, it may play dead, dropping to the ground for 200 game ticks (10 seconds) while gaining Regeneration I. Hostile aquatic mobs ignore healing axolotls. There is a 1⁄3 chance for an axolotl to play dead to recover 4. In addition, if either a random integer from 0–2 (inclusive) is less than the amount of incoming damage, or the axolotl's health before the damage is dealt is less than 50% of its maximum health, it plays dead.

Axolotls can leave the water and wander about on land. When an axolotl leaves the water, it wanders as far as 8 or 9 blocks beyond the water's edge before returning to the water, as long as there is water at least 2 blocks deep within 16 blocks of the axolotl. If 2-block-deep water is outside this range, the axolotl can wander off randomly on land in search of more deep water, and die after 6000 game ticks (5 minutes) exposure out of water. Axolotls are not attracted to shallow (1 block deep) water. They require water at least 2 blocks deep within 16 blocks to pathfind to the water.[1]

Axolotls can also die out of water as passengers in a boat. Unlike fish, dolphins, and squid, axolotls do not die on land in rain or in a thunderstorm.

Unlike most mobs, axolotls cannot be moved by flowing water. However, they are still affected by bubble columns.

As aquatic mobs, they take extra damage from the Impaling enchantment.‌[Java Edition only]‌[until JE Edition Combat Tests] Unlike other aquatic mobs, they cause nearby pufferfish to inflate.

Axolotls picked up with a water bucket and re-spawned do not despawn.

Axolotls can be renamed by placing a bucket of axolotl into an anvil, the same as if renaming any other item.

Breeding

Adult axolotls can be led and bred with buckets of tropical fish. After breeding, a baby axolotl spawns and 1–7 experience is generated. The parents cannot be bred again for 5 minutes in Java Edition or 1 minute in Bedrock Edition. The baby axolotl has a 1⁄1200 chance to be the rare blue variant; otherwise, it inherits the color of one parent at random. Babies follow adults, and grow to adulthood in 20 minutes. The growth of baby axolotls can be accelerated using buckets of tropical fish; each use reduces the remaining growing time by 10%.

Sounds

Axolotls use the Friendly Creatures sound category for entity-dependent sound events.

Trivia

  • In the release notes Minecraft Launcher there is an encrypted message T⍑ᒷ ᔑ ̇/𝙹ꖎ𝙹ℸ ̣ ꖎᓭ ᔑ∷ᒷ リ𝙹ℸ ̣ ∴⍑ᔑℸ ̣ ℸ ̣ ⍑ᒷ|| ᓭᒷᒷᒲ, which translates to "The Axolotls are not what they seem".
  • Axolotls are small salamanders that are endemic to Mexico, which are critically endangered. Following Mojang Studios' trend of adding endangered species such as polar bears, giant pandas (no longer an endangered as of 2022), sea turtles, and bees, axolotls were added to the game to raise awareness.[5][6]
  • The probability of a blue axolotl spawning is 1 in 1200 because that is approximately the number of axolotls left in the wild in real life.[7]
  • Axolotls can eat only buckets of tropical fish and not tropical fish items because axolotls in real life eat only living fish.[7]
  • The blue variant was a suggestion by user Darkiceflame on the Minecraft's Suggestion Box Reddit community. It is a reference to Mudkip from the Pokémon series.[8]
  • Even though they are not in the game, the green variant appears in the Caves & Cliffs: Part I announcement trailer and caves and cliffs recap.[9] When asked on a livestream, Agnes said she cannot say why the green variant was cut from the game.[10]
  • Both the "play dead" behavior and the regeneration ability of axolotls are based on the abilities of real life axolotls.[7]
  • Because real axolotls don't actually vocalize, the sounds of axolotls were recorded from the incidental "hiccups" and "burps" real axolotls occasionally make when surfacing, as well as heavily edited dog sounds.[11]
