  • What are people saying about fish & chips in San Francisco, CA?

This is a review for fish & chips in San Francisco, CA:

"I have been here twice, and both times the fish was fresh and delicious, and the service was wonderful. That said, I think when I go a third, fourth etc time, I will order the whole fish, either fish of the day, or the branzino. We ordered the red snapper and it was delicious and very fresh. The service is fantastic. I am gluten free, so I don't know about the pasta, but dining companions loved it."

It's weird how, when you get a long-term disease, your perspective changes.

There are things you take for granted every day that, once they're gone, you realise what you had. For me, it's all food related.

I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease about three years ago and from that day on, simple pleasures like going out to restaurants, meeting friends for a bite or even grabbing a snack on the go have become a minefield.

Which is why, when you do find a delicious restaurant serving good food at reasonable prices, that's willing to make the effort to accommodate you, it really does change your life a little bit.

Midgley's in Horsforth is a chippy that offers plenty of 'normal people food' - great fish and chips, sausage, onion rings, beans, mushy peas - all the usual fare and at very reasonable prices for Leeds. Don't get the wrong idea - it's not a fad diet takeaway or a poncy 'special food' eatery.

You can also order the food to pick up directly, you don't have to use JustEat or Deliveroo or a third party, you can order straight from its site on your phone. It helps keep prices down as you aren't serving a 30% cut to the app giants.

But the real draw for me is that the place also has a separate fryer. And virtually everything on the menu can be made gluten free using a gluten free batter, cooked in its own fryer. It means that I can actually eat the food.

Coeliac disease is no gluten free picnic. It's not actually an allergy - though it's often easier to tell people it is. It's an autoimmune disease. It means that when you eat gluten (i.e. wheat, standard flour), your body identifies it as an enemy and attacks it, but in the process of overreacting, damages itself. You don't instantly pass out or swell up on the spot like a nut allergy, but you can be very sick and in pain very quickly, there's no cure, and if a Coeliac keeps eating gluten, eventually the intestine becomes so damaged and painful that eating at all would be difficult, and it leads, cheerily, to things like cancer and an early death.

I'm Gluten Free! It's a relief to see these labels honestly

So many restaurants COULD make a note of this medical issue which now affects 1 in 100 people in the UK. They could offer gluten free, but don't. The simple addition of an extra fryer means even I can eat there just as easily as you can.

There *is* an asterisk to say that they cannot guarantee it's free from contamination, but honestly I've never been to a restaurant that didn't say this - I think it's to cover their backs just in case someone uses the wrong tongs or something. Chatting to the staff, they assure me it's prepared separately and cooked separately. Status report: no signs of poisoning, and believe me, when I get glutened my intestine feels like I've eaten a box of screws.

So what of the food?

Not too bad for gluten free, right?

Whether gluten full or gluten free, you get a large fish portion in light batter - not too greasy, not too crispy - and soft, potato-ey chips. The mushy peas are also pretty flavourful without being too 'green' tasting, and the onion rings are very flakey.

The bill for a battered sausage, a large Cod, two large chips, some onion rings and two lots of mushy peas was £16 - no therapy needed here. Lose the onion rings and get two lots of sausage and chips instead and you can get two meals with sides for less than £10.

In all, whether you have a chronic illness or just a chronic hunger - Midgley's is a decent bet at a reasonable price.
