Virtual Case Study: Bipolar Disorder When interventions should the nurse suggest for Susan's plan of care? Include your rationale for these interventions. 1. You are the nurse assigned to care for Mr. P, a 30-yrs old with bipolar disorder. He is currently hospitalized due to nonadherence to the plan of care, including medication, and suicidal ideation. Mr. P clearly does not want to be hospitalizes, and he is often hostile and agitated. How do you think Mr. P feels? Why do you think he feels this way? How do you know this? 2. Learning Template for Bipolar Disorder 3. What are the 2 common medications used to treat a patient with Bipolar Disorder. 1. The feeling of hostility and agitation Mr. P feels is due to his manic episode which is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy. This phase is followed by Hypomanic episode which lasts at least 4 consecutive days and present most of the day, nearly every day. Moreover, his suicidal ideation can be caused by the Major Depressive episode which has at least one of the symptoms of either depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure. A few studies indicate that bipolar II disorder is associated with more marital disruption and with onset at an earlier age compared to bipolar I disorder. Also, there are evidences that indicate patients who has bipolar II disorder are at a greater risk of both attempting and completing suicide than patients with bipolar I disorder and major depressive disorder. This may be caused by downregulation of norepinephrine and serotonin. These are according to the DSM- 5 criteria for Bipolar Disorders. 2. > Definition of Bipolar Disorder > Epidemiology > Etiology > Types of Bipolar Disorder > DSM-5 Criteria for Bipolar Disorder > Symptom Features > Clinical Features > Co-existing Disorder > Mental Status Examination > Differential Diagnosis > Course and Prognosis > Treatment 3.The pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder is divided into both acute and maintenance phases. Lithium has been the major approach of this disorder. However, anticonvulsant mood stabilizers like carbamazepine, valproate, and lamotrigine have been added recently and a series of atypical antipsychotics for the treatment of acute mania. In
